What is platelet-rich plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a blood product that contains a higher concentration of platelets than what typically circulates in your blood. You may know that platelets stop cuts from bleeding, but they also contain special proteins and growth factors that initiate the healing and repair process.

PRP takes advantage of your body’s natural healing cells.

Mid-South Foot & Ankle Specialists make the PRP they use for therapy by running tubes of your own blood through a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. Then, they activate the platelets and inject them directly into your injured or damaged tissue.

What conditions benefit from platelet-rich plasma?

Mid-South Foot & Ankle Specialists use PRP injections to support the healing of injuries and diseases that affect the musculoskeletal system. This includes your muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints.

Conditions that may benefit from PRP injections include:

  • Sprains
  • Arthritis
  • Tendinosis
  • Pulled muscles
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tendon injuries
  • Ankle ligament injuries
  • Post-op foot or ankle pain

The physicians at Mid-South Foot & Ankle Specialists may only recommend PRP injections if other less invasive treatments, like physical therapy or oral medications like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), have failed to improve your condition.

What can I expect during platelet-rich plasma therapy?

Your provider at Mid-South Foot & Ankle Specialists customizes your PRP therapy plan based on your diagnosis. After drawing a blood sample from your arm to make your PRP, your provider cleans the area at the site of your injection with an antiseptic soap.

Then, using ultrasound-guided imaging, your provider injects the PRP directly into the injured or damaged tissue. They have you remain at the office for a set period of time and then send you home.

Unless otherwise directed, you can resume most of your usual activities after your PRP injection.

What can I expect after platelet-rich plasma therapy?

You may experience some pain and swelling at the site of your PRP injection after your therapy. This is normal and part of your body’s healing process.

Though results vary, you may notice improvements in symptoms and function within a few weeks following your injection. Mid-South Foot & Ankle Specialists may recommend a series of PRP injections to get the best outcomes.

Platelet-rich plasma may support your body’s natural repair process, easing pain and restoring function. Call Mid-South Foot & Ankle Specialists or schedule an appointment online today.
